Joshua traveled through town in a daze, not really aware of his current surroundings, thinking of his destination. And as Joshua bounced up to the table where Bradley was sitting, he looked over Bradley’s shoulder from behind at the paper place mat on which he’d been scribbling. At the top of the placemat, he’d written a song title: A Train of Thought. Then abstract thoughts without any rhythm or rhyme, just notes. Such as: Like a train moves through the landscape, my mind moves through time; Time doesn’t move, only my thoughts through the landscape.

He turned as the door clicked shut behind them and noticed that there was no doorknob on this side. The metal was completely smooth, no way to return from where they came. Joshua began to sweat.

EXCERPT #3


She had a teaching position at Marquette University. She was in her lab dressed in a green smock with dark purple trim. Though she was a scientist, fashion was important to her. Because she was a scientist, she pushed maybe a little too hard on her individualism, a fashion statement, an eccentric personality leaning away from the socially inept science nerd, a social butterfly. Associates called her Magda, not Dr. Van Vogt.
